9th Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration, Challenges in Formulating The National Budget for 2013 delivered by Dr P B Jayasundara, on 12th October 2012.
The Alumni Association in collaboration with the Lions Club of Colombo Host organized an eye camp at the University premises on the 6th of August 2011 for the Staff and the Undergraduates. George Gooneratna renowned Opticians tested the eyes and provided tailor-made specific spectacles to those who required them. They charged a very nominal rate for each pair of spectacles.
Large crowds gathered from 9 a.m. onwards and more than 185 Staff members and Undergraduates registered with us to get their eyes tested. The Alumni along with the Lions and George Gooneratna Opticians, had an enormous task attending to the crowds, and the eye camp went on till 3.30 p.m. in order to cater to the demand.
Soft Skills Development Programme
The Alumni Association conducted a soft skills development workshop on 10th August 2011 with the participation of 50 undergraduate students on personal effectiveness and leadership skills under the theme, ‘What you got here, won’t get you there: How successful people become even more successful?’.
Key objective of the program was to assist in bridging the gap between the final year undergraduate students and the real life corporate world via a discussion of good practices and set of tools to be used on a regular basis. The workshop focused on attitude and skills development and leadership to integrate via a personal life plan.
The Alumni Association wishes to extend its sincere thanks to Mr Dhanushka Jayakody; Managing Director and Senior Consultant of Colombo Institute of Social Sciences (CISS) for his voluntary support and efforts for the betterment of the undergraduates of the University of Colombo.
The Alumni Association of the University of Colombo records with deep appreciation the very generous donation of Rupees One Million (Rs. 1,000,000/=) received towards the Maintenance of the Sujata Jayawardena Hostel for Women Undergraduates in Buller’s Lane, Colombo 07. This donation has been made by two alumni members who wish to remain anonymous. We hope to utilize this generous donation for the urgently required maintenance of the hostel.Our heartfelt gratitude for all the support extended by them on behalf of the women undergraduates in the hostel and the University of Colombo. There were 132 Staff members and Undergraduates who were prescribed spectacles which were given to them at a subsidized rate of Rs. 500/- each. The balance amount of Rs. 500/- per spectacle was borne by the Lions Club of Colombo Host and the Alumni Association. Total expenses incurred on spectacles was Rs. 147,800/- for which the Lions Club of Colombo Host made a contribution of Rs. 50,000/-.
Empowering the youth of Sri Lanka, the Hatton National Bank (HNB) entered into partnership with University of Colombo to broadbase opportunities for youth under its Yauwanabhimana> initiative on 1st December 2011.
Hon Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Plantation Industries & Special Envoy of H.E. the President on Human Rights, delivered the Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration on Human Rights: International Challenges for Sri Lanka at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on 2nd December 2011
Mentoring Programme for Undergraduates
The Alumni Association has recently launched a Mentoring Programme for undergraduates of the University of Colombo. This programme will consist of 'one to one' sessions as well as group sessions that will help our undergraduates to acquire soft skills that are necessary for them to be more employable for jobs in the government and private sectors.
